Songs You Know, Played from

Around the World Synchronously

Playing for Change is one of the most distinctive music projects of the last 20 years. It’s not a traditional band or just a video production company — it’s a global music movement built around the idea that music can connect people across cultures, languages, and borders.

Playing for Change was founded in 2002 by Mark Johnson and Whitney Kroenke. They started the project with the idea that music could connect people across cultures and borders.

Their signature format is called “Songs Around the World.” They record musicians separately in different countries — street performers, famous artists, local folk musicians, choirs, drummers, guitarists — and then edit all the performances together into one seamless song.

A big part of why the videos feel so intimate is their production method:

  • They travel with a mobile recording studio
  • Each musician hears the previous performers through headphones
  • They record in natural environments — streets, rooftops, beaches, villages, subway stations
  • Later, all the performances are layered together into a single mix and video

The emotional effect comes from hearing:

  • different accents
  • different instruments
  • different cultures
  • all playing the same song together.
